Colts Inactives: At Titans

The Indianapolis Colts announced their inactive players for Sunday’s 1 PM EST matchup against the Tennessee Titans:

"CB Darius Butler (hip)CB Greg Toler (neck)OLB Trent Cole (knee)OG Lance Louis (shoulder)NT T.Y. McGillOT Denzelle Good TE Dwayne Allen (ankle)"

Obviously, the Colts will be without 2 of their top 3 cornerbacks again. This means Jalil Brown will start alongside Vontae Davis, while Eric Patterson and recently added veteran Josh Thomas will see extended action today in a severely depleted Colts secondary.

Otherwise, it looks as though 3rd-year veteran Hugh Thornton will start at left guard for the injured Louis. That could end up being a blessing in disguise, as Lance Louis has been highly ineffective this season. Thornton has 20 career starts in 3 seasons, so the former 2013 3rd round pick has considerable experience as a starter. This could very well be a “now or never” moment for the so far disappointing young guard.

The Colts pass rush takes a considerable hit with the loss of Cole. However, the defense is getting back 2nd-year pass rusher Jonathan Newsome back this week, who missed last Monday night’s game with a hamstring injury. With Robert Mathis still on a limited snap-count, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Newsome get the start today in Cole’s absence.

There’s no question that losing Dwayne Allen is a big blow to the Colts offense, as his versatility in run blocking and in the receiving game makes him a tremendous asset. However, the team has one of the best 2nd tight ends in football in Coby Fleener and shouldn’t theoretically lose much in the receiving game. It’s in run and pass blocking where Allen will be sorely missed nevertheless.
