The Indianapolis Colts announced today that the team has signed cornerback Josh Thomas, while waiving fellow cornerback Eric Patterson in a corresponding move.
Originally a 5th round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, the well-traveled Thomas has also played for the Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Detroit Lions, and Minnesota Vikings organization during his 5-year NFL career.

Last season, Thomas appeared in 5 games with the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, and Seattle Seahawks, recording 2 tackles and 2 passes deflected.
The 5’11, 185 pound cornerback has appeared in 43 career games, starting 10 with 51 career tackles, 1 interception, and 11 passes deflected respectively.
It’s worth noting that Patterson was thrusted into action during the team’s Monday Night football loss to the New York Jets, as the team’s Top 3 cornerbacks were out with injuries. Either he didn’t impress enough or the team is simply looking for a more proven option like Thomas given the dire need at the cornerback position.
Additionally, the team released cornerback Brandon Dixon from the practice squad and reached an injury settlement with running back Vick Ballard on injured reserve, which means he’s free to sign with any team and is no longer a member of the Colts.
It’s a sad ending for Ballard’s Colts tenure after such an impressive rookie season with the team. He led the team in rushing during the 2012 season with 814 rushing yards. However, the oft-injured, yet talented young running back just couldn’t simply stay on the field during the past few seasons.
