According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Indianapolis Colts veteran pass rusher Robert Mathis had 10 surgeries in an 8 month span in trying to fully repair his season-ending torn Achilles suffered early last season:
"“During his rehab, Mathis had 10 surgical procedures over an eight-month span to prevent infection and ensure that the Achilles was healing right, according to league sources,” writes Schefter. “Doctors were amazed the 34-year-old Mathis suffered the number of setbacks he did, as well as the determination he demonstrated in overcoming them.”“It is the reason that what normally is a six-month recovery period has taken a full year,” added Schefter."
This only confirms an earlier report that there had been setbacks with Mathis rehabilitation from a torn Achilles, which the latter’s agent later vehemently denied.

Regardless, the fact that Mathis is so far along in his recovery after so many surgeries truly speaks dividends to his hard work and dedication in his rehabilitation. Yes, the 34 year old fell a bit short of his goal of being ready for the team’s regular season opener against the Buffalo Bills today.
However, Mathis has consistently overcome the odds and defied expectations during his entire 13-year NFL career. From being an undersized 5th round pick of the Colts in 2003 out of unheralded Alabama A&M to becoming the franchise’s all-time sack leader with 111 career sacks.
Don’t bet against #98.
Whenever Mathis does indeed return, he figures to provide a pass rushing upgrade to the Colts defense. While it’s unclear if he’ll be able to regain all of his prior form, he still figures to help boost the team’s pass rush with his veteran pass rush savvy.
Even if Mathis wasn’t quite ready to fully go today, it appears that his return should be relatively soon. It’s a testament to both the player and person Mathis is, coming off such a significant injury with so many unforeseen serious complications.
Yet once again, defying all odds.
