Indianapolis Colts Release Guard Donald Thomas

According to reports, the Indianapolis Colts have released oft injured guard Donald Thomas. Thomas spent the past two season on IR after playing in just one full game for the Colts.

Thomas was signed in 2013 but tore his quad just a few snaps into Week 2’s game against the Miami Dolphins. Thomas would re-tear the quad muscle in training camp during a scrimmage in 2014.

Thomas entered camp on the physically unable to perform list, but was taken off that list late this past week. It appears that he simply wasn’t making enough progress and the team has decided to part ways with him. The move will save the Colts $3.5 million in cap this season as well.

This marks another player cut from the 2013 free agency class along with Gosder Cherilus, LaRon Landry, and Ricky Jean-Francois. The Colts have spent big in free agency and it hasn’t always paid off. They also brought in Erik Walden, Greg Toler, and Darius Butler in this class who have all become starters for the Colts (not to mention Matt Hasselbeck who has helped with Andrew Luck‘s development).

The Colts offensive line has been a mess for years now and every move the team has made doesn’t seem to work. Save for drafting Jack Mewhort, the Colts have yet to find a quality offensive lineman despite multiple draft picks and large amounts of money spent in free agency. Cherilus and Thomas looked like good signings at the time, but injuries took their toll and now people will unfairly call them busts.

This is the first cut of the week for the Colts as they work to get from 90 players down to 75 before Tuesday afternoon. The front office is going to have a number of tough decisions, such as what to do with oft injured running back Vick Ballard who once again was unable to play this week with a sore hamstring.

Expect a slew of cuts over the next 24 hours.
