The Indianapolis Colts announced today that they have made a roster move, as the team claimed cornerback Tevin Mitchel and waived safety Robert Smith in a corresponding move.
Mitchel was a 2015 6th round pick (#182 pick) of the Washington Redskins from Arkansas and was waived on Wednesday after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder before being claimed by the Colts today.
Mitchel played in 11 games for the Razorbacks last season, starting in 5 games. During his senior season, he recorded 20 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 8 pass deflections.
Per his NFL Draft Profile, the 6’0, 190 pound cornerback’s scouting evaluation reads:
"STRENGTHSHas above average quickness and desired twitch as a cornerback. Smooth backpedal with the chance to be a slot nickel as a pro."
"WEAKNESSESHas a history of injuries and scouts are concerned about his durability and ability to play through pain. Needs to improve his play strength on the next level."
However, despite the injury, the Colts are still enamored enough with Mitchel’s future career potential to take a flyer on him and eventually place him on the team’s injured reserve in the hopes for next season.
The player he effectively replaces is Robert Smith, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson this offseason, but apparently did not show the Colts coaches enough at safety to warrant keeping on.
