Robert Mathis Could Begin Training Camp on PUP

According to defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, the Indianapolis Colts will be taking it easy in training camp, as it relates to the health of their veteran pass rusher Robert Mathis.

Today at training camp, Manusky even suggested that Mathis could begin training camp on PUP (physically unable to perform), as he rehabilitates from a torn Achilles injury:

"“I think that will be determined later on in the night when we talk about it, if he’s going to go on PUP,” said Manusky. “I don’t know the whereabouts, but whenever he’s back, we’re ready to have him.”“It was great two years ago when he led the league in sacks I think it was, and then last year, to not have the ability to do anything,” added Manusky. “You know he’s going to have that extra fire in his belly, and we just have to make sure we monitor him the right way and get him on the field to perform at a high level.”"

While Mathis was optimistic earlier this offseason about being ready for training camp, it appears his return may take a bit longer than he originally anticipated. At 34 years old and coming off a significant injury, the Colts will want to take every precaution to allow the veteran pass rusher to make a fully healthy return.

Regardless of when Mathis will be making his comeback, the Colts are clearly excited for his return:

"“With Robert coming back, you know he’s been working hard, and we’re looking forward to getting him back whenever that might be,” added Manusky. “It might be in the beginning of training camp. It might be whenever. We’re excited to get him.”"

It’s just a matter of when that return exactly may be:

"“I don’t think anybody knows,” concluded Manusky. “I think it’s his body and whenever he comes back, he feels healthy and he’s ready to roll. That’ll be the point. I think discussions with the training staff, head coach, and GM and even with us, just to figure out what’s the best timing with him and he’s going to be 100%. Not 85%. Not 90%."
