Colts Comeback Player of the Year: Robert Mathis

After suffering a season-ending torn Achilles injury last season while serving his 4 game suspension, Robert Mathis never got to actually play a snap for the Colts last season. However, according to him and his ongoing rehabilitation, he’s optimistic that he’ll be ready to go by the start of the NFL’s regular season which is encouraging to say the least.

While Mathis is 34 years old and coming off a fairly significant injury, he’s still just one season removed from a 19.5 sack season with the Colts in 2013. If he can regain anything close to his prior form, the beloved veteran figures to provide a significant upgrade to the Colts pass rush and could push for double-digit sacks yet again.

One might be able to make an argument for Andre Johnson here in what could be a rebound season, but Mathis is the only one of the two that actually ever left the game. The Colts would be thrilled if Gosder Cherilus could enter this discussion though because that means the big man is fully recovered and is serving as a solid starting right tackle along their offensive line.

However, Mathis appears to be the soundest choice here, a sentimental favorite, and the most fitting for Colts Comeback Player of the Year.
