Pagano on Phillip Dorsett at OTA’s: ‘He’s Got Rare, Rare Speed’

It’s only Week 6 of the team’s offseason program, but Indianapolis Colts rookie wideout Phillip Dorsett has already seemingly impressed. While the talented first round pick inked his rookie contract today, he’s also been able to showcase his speed and receiving ability at the team’s recent OTA practices.

His head coach in Chuck Pagano has had nothing but high praise for his blazing fast rookie wideout, specifically noting that he has “rare, rare speed”, indicating that he can blow past defenders in a hurry:

"“He’s got rare, rare speed and burst,” Pagano said after Wednesday’s OTA practice. “And he’s so smooth that he doesn’t look like he’s running until he’s 5 yards past you.”"

However, perhaps just as impressive, is Dorsett’s cerebral approach to the game, where Pagano has already noted that his rookie has been a quick learner. The Colts offense can be fairly complex at first, as wideouts have to learn to play at multiple spots, both on the inside and out. However, Dorsett has apparently picked things up quickly and without much issue according to Pagano:

"“The guy’s again, he’s playing multiple spots, very smart guy,” said Pagano. “And the offense is not one that most guys can come in and play, play the x, the z, play the f, you know multiple spots in the offense, whether we’re in base or whether we’re in our subpackages, our 3-wide package. But, he’s picking things up well.”"

It appears that Dorsett is wise beyond his football years as a rookie. However, anyone thinking that his receiving game is all speed with little of any other substance is clearly mistaken. Not only does Dorsett flash “rare speed”, but he also has the athleticism and a good set of hands to go along with it, which makes him a dynamic receiving threat:

"“Coach Hoss [Jim Hostler] has done a great job with him, and he’s got the talent, he’s got the speed, he’s got good hands,” added Pagano. “Um, I don’t know if he’s dropped 4, 5 balls since he’s been here.”"

Many wideouts either have speed or hands, but not many of them have both. While he’s still a bit unpolished as a rookie, but clearly blessed with both, Dorsett has the chance to be a complete receiving package in time, which bodes just great for an already prolific Colts passing attack.
