With the 109th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Clayton Geathers, safety from the University of Central Florida.

The Colts continued with not only the defensive theme on the third day of the draft but also taking players from a Florida university. The Colts have taken players from UCF, Florida Atlantic, and Miami in this draft.

Geathers was an above average defender who played five years at UCF. He was redshirted after one game in his freshman season, but started in 52 games after that season.

Geathers finished his career with 383 tackles, 19 for a loss, and one sack. In 2012 and 2013, he had over 100 tackles and was just shy of that mark with 97 in his senior campaign. Geathers had just three interceptions in his career but was credited with 30 passes defensed. He also had five forced fumbles.

His instincts are the best part of his game and he was a vocal leader on the defense at UCF. He’s aggressive in run support and hits hard, but could take better angles on his approach. Geathers is good in coverage and has the range to break up a pass (with a 4.55 40 time). At 6-1 and 218 pounds, he also has the size to take on opposing tight ends.

Geathers struggles when it comes to tracking the ball in the air and his lack of interceptions (and history of drops) indicate why he’s a defender. He fits the Colts’ need for an in-the-box safety who is willing to come up in run support and do the dirty work on defense.

Geathers is also the fifth member of his family to be drafted into the NFL and will the be the sixth to play in the league. He has three cousins who are active and two of his uncles made it as well.

Make sure to stay tuned as the draft presses on.
