The Indianapolis Colts opened up the third round of the NFL Draft by selecting cornerback D’Joun Smith out of Florida Atlantic.

The Colts traded out of the 61st pick in the second round of the draft. The dropped back just four spots in a deal with the Buccaneers to open up the third round of the draft. The deal also essentially swapped fourth round picks with the Colts moving up to the 109th pick from the 128th, which will go to the Bucs.

Smith played three years with the Owls and found the field in 34 games. He had nine interceptions in that time and 30 passes defensed. He is a versatile player who can line up against slot receivers and go outside against primary receivers. Smith had 113 career tackles and three forced fumbles.

Smith ran a 4.35 40 yard dash and has solid strength as well. He measured in at 5-10 and 187 pounds. Smith’s a willing defender in run support but will have to get stronger in order to make a true impact there.

He is good in coverage and can play press-man as well. Smith has the speed to catch up to his man if he gets burned but is sometimes slow out of his breaks. Smith also has some range and is open to the idea of switching to safety, giving the Colts a versatile option.

Smith also has experience as a kick returner and with the Colts first round selection of Phillip Dorsett, its safe to assume they found a return man.

Cornerback is definitely a need for the team as Greg Toler enters a contract year and the team is thin at the position behind Darius Butler. Smith is the ideal build to take over the duties of slot defender and could pressure Butler for snaps.
