Colts Promote Wide Receiver Quan Bray from Practice Squad

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday that the team has promoted undrafted rookie wide receiver Quan Bray from the practice squad and waived safety Dewey McDonald in a corresponding move.

It’s an encouraging sign that at least one of the team’s two injured safeties Mike Adams (hamstring) and Clayton Geathers (knee) from last week will be healthy enough to play on Monday against the Carolina Panthers.

It’s been previously reported that head coach Chuck Pagano expects both safeties to be back on the practice field on Wednesday:

Having lost Phillip Dorsett to a fractured ankle for 4-6 weeks, the Colts were in need of additional wide receiver depth. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent, Bray really stood out at training camp this offseason before being stashed on the team’s practice squad at preseason’s end.

Bray, 22, is a 5’10”, 295 pound wideout from Auburn. For the Tigers last season, Bray caught 90 receptions for 849 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns; however, he’s also highly regarded for his punt returning prowess. In fact, Bray ranked 2nd in punt returns with an 18.1 ypr average and was named Second-Team All-SEC as a return specialist last year.

With special teams returnman Griff Whalen having had recent ball security issues–after fumbling three times in last Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, it’s possible Bray could even see himself as the team’s new primary special teams returnman going forward.
