According to ESPN NFL Reporter Field Yates, the Indianapolis Colts also worked out Ex-Buffalo Bills running back Bryce Brown earlier this week:

Of course, it’s already been widely reported that Ahmad Bradshaw has worked out for the Colts this week; however, Brown’s name has yet to be linked.

Originally a 7th round pick of the Eagles in 2012, Brown has spent the last two seasons with the Buffalo Bills. The 6’0, 220 lb Brown appeared in 7 games last season for the Bills with 2 starts, rushing for 126 rushing yards on 36 carries (3.5 ypc avg) and no touchdowns.

Brown saw early career success with the Eagles, as he rushed for 564 rushing yards 115 carries (4.9 ypc avg) and 4 rushing touchdowns during his rookie season. However, he has yet to duplicate the same degree of success.

While it is unclear if Brown will ultimately be signed by the Colts, one thing is for certain. That is, that the Colts are clearly kicking the tires on upgrading their backfield behind starting running back Frank Gore. Between Brown and Bradshaw, the team has brought in some established free agent veteran running backs this week.

It makes sense too. Right now, rookie running back Josh Robinson has struggled with ball security issues, and the team’s other primary backup Tyler Varga is still dealing with a concussion and hasn’t practiced all week.

It’s not hard to see that the Colts could clearly use a more proven backup running back right now. If it were me, I’d prefer Bradshaw for familiarity purposes. However, Brown could prove to be useful too, especially if he can regain his prior form.

It’s worth noting that Brown has worked out for a pair of AFC East rivals in the New England Patriots and New York Jets earlier this season, but left both teams without a contract.
