Anthony Castonzo Reportedly Finalizing Colts Contract Extension

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Indianapolis Colts are reportedly finalizing a contract extension with starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo:

Here are the reported numbers, which will presumably make Castonzo one of the highest paid left tackles in all of football. Rightfully so too, as Castonzo is charged with the highly important task of protecting his superstar quarterback Andrew Luck‘s blindside:

The former 2011 1st round pick has been an incredibly durable bookend for the team’s offensive line over his 5 year career.

Last season, Castonzo never missed a start for the Colts and played in all 1,400 of the offense’s snaps last season including playoffs. It’s worth noting that his 726 snaps in pass protection last season actually led the NFL.

However, Castonzo doesn’t just play a lot of left tackle, as he plays it very well.

According to ProFootballFocus (subscription), his +15.2 grade overall last season was the 12th best among all NFL tackles. Specifically, his +14.4 grade in pass blocking was the 6th best in the entire league at his position.

For a high profile passing attack that is the Colts offense, Castonzo is really the team’s anchor along the offensive line and is well-deserving of such a new lucrative long-term contract.

Given that the highest paid left tackles in football make around $9-11 million annually, and it’s easy to see that his new deal containing $10.5 million annually seems fairly reasonable. It seems like a good deal for both sides, and it’s great to see that the Colts have their elite starting left tackle locked up for the foreseeable future.
