Once Healed, Colts Could Look to Bring Boom Herron Back

According to multiple Indianapolis media sources, the Indianapolis Colts could look to re-sign recently released running back Dan “Boom” Herron once his injured shoulder is fully healed:

Apparently, his shoulder injury suffered as a kick returner in last Thursday’s preseason finale isn’t thought to be season-ending. Rather, the Colts simply couldn’t afford to keep him given their limited roster spots, while he recovers from injury:

While that seems like a fair point, what is rather perplexing is that the team opted to release Herron, yet kept the oft-injured Vick Ballard as a backup running back on their active roster. The latter is battling his own injury, as he suffered a hamstring injury in this past Thursday’s preseason game.

However, unlike Herron, Ballard hasn’t played in two seasons, having suffered two consecutive season-ending injuries. Rehabilitating from a torn Achilles injury, Ballard was limited all offseason, as he played in just 29 total snaps in preseason.

Perhaps, Ballard’s injury isn’t thought to be as serious as Herron’s, and he’s projected to see the field far sooner. However, Herron had a fairly productive season for the Colts in relief of their ground game last season, and it seems like a bit of a gamble for the team to release him given other potentially interested teams.

Either way, it appears that this was a tough decision by the Colts, and it’ll be interesting to see if it ends up being the right move as the season progresses.
