Trent Cole ‘Feeling Wanted’ With Colts
While he played his first 10 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, new Indianapolis Colt Trent Cole has quickly found a new home. His former team under head coach Chip Kelly thought he was getting a bit long in the tooth and released him earlier this offseason, but what was another team’s trash, is clearly the Colts treasure right now:
"“I’m glad to be with a team that wants me here, wants my services and they feel like I can be an impact to this team,” said Cole via ESPN’s Mike Wells. That’s a great feeling to have, coming to the Colts. We have a lot of talent and a lot of great players here. Just makes you excited for the upcoming season.”"
At 32 years old, Cole’s best football may be behind him, as he hasn’t had a double digit sack season since 2011. However, that doesn’t mean he still can’t be a highly productive pass rusher for the Colts. He had 6.5 sacks for the Eagles last season, but that number is a bit misleading. To clarify, according to ProFootballFocus (subscription), Cole had a +11.3 pass rush grade last season, which placed him as the 12th best 3-4 outside linebacker in getting to the quarterback.
The Colts will be leaning heavily on the 11-year veteran, especially if Robert Mathis cannot return for the start of the season. Cole figures to help lead what appears to be a crowded group at outside linebacker, also including Erik Walden, Jonathan Newsome, and Bjoern Werner.
With his career clock ticking, Cole knows Indianapolis could be one of his last opportunities for a chance at a Super Bowl ring. It was a big reason why he signed a 2-year, $16 million dollar deal with the team earlier this offseason. When asked whether he still has something left in the tank, Cole responded:
"“I’ve always told (reporters), the footage doesn’t lie and you need to go back and look at the footage and it’ll tell you if I’m going downhill,” replied Cole. “I feel rejuvenated. Getting in the flow with the team and coming out this minicamp, it’s been great.”"
