Irsay, Hilton Looking To Get Extension Done Before Season’s Start

According to Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is aiming to lock up wide receiver T.Y. Hilton as soon as possible, maybe even before the season’s start.

This is very uplifting news for the team and its fans due to the fact that in his three seasons in the NFL, Hilton has placed himself into the conversation for one of the league’s best young wide receivers.

In his three seasons in the NFL, Hilton has 3,289 receiving yards, 19 touchdowns, and is averaging a whopping 15.5 yards per-catch. To say that Hilton isn’t deserving of a hefty payday himself would be nonsense. He has proven to the team that he is capable of being a true No. 1 receiver and has made opposing defenses take notice of his playmaking abilities on the field.

Extending Hilton before the start of the season would not only be the right thing to do for the Colts, but the smartest thing to do. Retaining him before the NFL’s 2016 free-agency period prevents any other team from attempting to pry Hilton from the Colts and locks him up long-term, thus providing Andrew Luck with a reliable offensive threat for years to come.

With many players including Luck looking to get extensions within the next year, the Colts would be very wise to go ahead and lock up a talented young player like Hilton to a long-term contract as soon as possible. Hilton has proven he’s a bonafide #1 wideout and remains Luck’s favorite target going forward.
