Colts Rank 9th in ESPN Uniform Power Rankings

The “Worldwide Leader in Sports” in ESPN released their NFL uniform power rankings per Paul Lukas, and the Indianapolis Colts snuck in their top 10 at 9th overall:

While some may argue that the Colts should revamp their current “old-school” uniforms, there’s something to be said for the iconic horseshoe and classic blue look. The Colts white helmet with the blue horseshoe has been their look since the very beginning of the team’s history in 1953, when the team resided in Baltimore instead of Indianapolis.

Sometimes, modernization can change things for the worse, and while the Colts have made some small changes here and there to their overall uniform and helmet design, the basic Colts uniform design has remained largely untouched, even surviving an NFL relocation to Indianapolis in 1984.

Why fix something that clearly isn’t broken?

Rounding out the Top 5, were largely other classic looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers at #1, the Oakland Raiders at #2, the Green Bay Packers at #3, the Chicago Bears at #4, and the San Diego Chargers at #5. It’s clear that the old school looks are clearly still beating out the modern day re-designs.

And why not?

Some of the most iconic logos and uniform designs in professional sports come from teams that haven’t changed their looks much. Teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics, have stuck to what they’re great at, and while other logos, uniforms, and trends have come and gone, their uniform designs have withstood the test of time and maintained their same greatness.

Kudos to the Colts for sticking to their own iconic blue horseshoe and classic uniform design, as it may be an “oldie”, but it’s definitely still a “goodie”. While the team tinkering with an alternate modern uniform design may be a fun idea to wear occasionally for a handful of special games, count me as one that likes the team’s classic blue horseshoe uniform design just the way it is.

From Johnny Unitas to Andrew Luck, some things simply transcend time.
