Could Colts Duo Aid in Tom Brady’s DeflateGate Appeal?
As noted by The Indianapolis Star’s Stephen Holder, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could receive some assistance from two Indianapolis Colts players in the appeal of his issued 4-game DeflateGate suspension by the league office.
Wait what?
What was eloquently pointed out by Holder today is that both Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck serve on the NFL Players Association Executive Committee, which means they are responsible for assisting in the defending of players’ rights, including Brady:
While Brady previously ignored the help of the NFL Players Association during the ongoing Ted Wells investigation, it appears that he’s decided to change course after being handed a 4-game suspension:
It’s now being reported that Brady has assembled an “all-star” legal team through the NFL’s Players Association including their high-profile, “heavy hitter” in outside legal counsel Jeffrey Kessler. The latter has already played a pivotal role in recent noteworthy NFL cases including the New Orleans Saints in “Bountygate”, the Ray Rice domestic incident, and Adrian Peterson’s recent suspension.
Per reported league sources, Brady’s suspension could even be overturned given the big name and talented lawyer team at his disposal including Kessler:
"“Brady’s team is unreal,” the source said via ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Talented, big-name lawyers: Yee, Kessler, etc. Prediction=won’t miss a game.”"
Whatever the eventual verdict of his appeal is, it’s a funny, even bizarre thought that two Colts players could actually aid Brady in overturning his league mandated suspension. While Kessler will assuredly perform the heavy-lifting on the NFL Players Association’s behalf, it will be interesting to see if either Vinatieri or Hasselbeck play even a limited role in defending Brady.
Sometimes, duty calls.
