Colts Pep Hamilton Excited Over Potential of 3-Wideout Formation

Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton has reportedly wasted little time in trying to come up with more 3-wideout offensive packages. According to Colts.com Media Reporter Steve Andress, Hamilton raced to his office and immediately got rid of some of his 3-tight end package playcalls among others once the team officially drafted blazing fast Miami Hurricane wideout Phillip Dorsett with their recent 1st round pick:

With star young wideout T.Y. Hilton and proven veteran Andre Johnson as the #1 and #2 wideouts respectively, and emerging 2nd-year wideout Donte Moncrief also in the mix, Hamilton already had a handful of playmakers at the wide receiver position. With Dorsett now in the equation, the more 3-wideout packages, the merrier…much to the dismay of opposing defenses.

Hamilton plans on taking full advantage according to Andress, citing the Colts tremendous depth at wideout as superior to most opposing teams’ limited depth at cornerback:

Simply put, Hamilton and the Colts believe that their 3rd wideout is going to be better than any 3rd cornerback they face in most games, and that’s certainly a matchup his offense will look to exploit now more often than not.

While most fans enjoy hometown hero Jack Doyle and his “jack-of-all-trades” game (no pun intended) as the 3rd tight end, this is one instance where it may be okay to see less of the 3-tight end set and more of explosive young wideouts like Dorsett and Moncrief respectively. It should make the Colts offense all the more dangerous, which is a scary thought. Unlike Hamilton who’s apparently shaking from excitement, opposing 3rd cornerbacks will be shaking for other reasons entirely.
