Report: Some Colts Players Not Happy With First Round Pick

On Thursday night, Indianapolis Colts fans eagerly awaited the team’s first round pick in the NFL Draft. Many fans ended up disappointed in the selection of Miami wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. According to a story by Mike Florio Pro Football Talk, some of the players might not be too happy with the selection either.

"Per a league source, multiple Colts players aren’t happy with the team’s draft strategy, specifically with the decision to use a first-round pick on receiver Phillip Dorsett. The thinking is that the Colts should have taken a safety like Landon Collins or a tackle (defensive or offensive) with the 29th overall pick in the draft.  A receiver could have been taken later than round one, and he would have arrived with less of a presumption that:  (1) he’ll be on the field; and (2) he’ll have the ball thrown his way plenty."

Its true most fans were upset at the Dorsett pick. It not that he isn’t a good player but rather that the team has so many holes on defense and along the offensive line that this was essentially a luxury pick the team didn’t need.

The Colts are stocked at wide receiver and the prevailing theory was that the offseason signings of Andre Johnson and Duron Carter essentially took wide receiver off the draft board.

However, the Colts stuck with their philosophy of taking the best player available and that meant Dorsett with the 29th pick. The report indicates that this might have ruffled the feathers of some of the players, most likely those in the receiving corps.

If anyone has a legitimate gripe about this pick, it would most likely be Carter. The rookie, with Hall of Fame blood, is going to be fighting for a roster spot and snaps.

In 2014, four wide receivers had over 400 plays, with Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton taking each having over 800 plays. That doesn’t even account for 800-plus players for Coby Fleener and over 600 for Dwayne Allen

The Colts will be able to wreck havoc with matchups next season, but unless the team opts to run a spread offense (which will probably never happen under Chuck Pagano), someone is going to be unhappy at the number of snaps they get next season.

What’s interesting is that each wide receiver gives the team something different on the field. Johnson is a large target and a possession receiver. T.Y. Hilton is basically Andrew Luck‘s safety blanket at this point as well as the team’s deep threat. Donte Moncrief is a deep threat with size. While Carter’s skill set remains to be seen, reports indicate he can do a little of everything and could develop into a dynamic receiver.

While Carter is the obvious choice to be upset with the Dorsett pick, Moncrief could be right there as well. He offers a different skill set then Dorsett, but Moncrief is still trying to develop as a player and more competition for snaps could stunt his growth.

The less obvious choice might by Hilton. Dorsett is basically a Hilton clone. There was the thought that this pick would offer some insurance in case the team decided not to re-sign Hilton at the end of the year or if a deal can’t be worked out.

While we don’t know who was in fact unhappy with the pick, and therefore how valid Florio’s report is, we do know that offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton will have a wealth of options on offense in 2015.
