Earlier this year, the Indianapolis Colts had a stunning setback as they worked to rebuild the struggling defense. Two of the best players on the defense, Zaire Franklin and Jaylon Carlies, were injured. Carlies had undergone surgery on his shoulder, while Franklin hurt his ankle and would need surgery also. And right from the beginning, it was clear he would miss offseason practices through training camp.
Yet now, more bad news has been delivered; while Franklin has been making good progress, and is able to run and work out, he will miss the first day of training camp tomorrow.

This is a blow for the Colts defense, as they work to learn their new scheme under Lou Anarumo, who is beginning his first season as defensive coordinator. But Franklin is a major leader on this team, and a talented linebacker. So while he will be behind the eight-ball, there's no doubting that he will eventually return. He had a fantastic season in 2024, with a career-high 15 quarterback pressures, four sacks, and two interceptions, as well as leading the NFL in tackles, making his first Pro Bowl, and being named a second-team All-Pro. Yep - Zaire Franklin's roster spot is a lock.
Yet in his absence, there is a golden opportunity for a new member of the Colts roster to shine.
This is Joe Bachie's chance to make a statement
When it comes to training camp battles at linebacker, there are really only two players who are facing a potential cut, because let's face it - Franklin and Carlies aren't going anywhere. That leaves Colts veteran Segun Olubi and new signing Joe Bachie. Olubi, so far, has not made much of a statement in his career, and this all gives Bachie a major chance to finally become a starter.
Bachie worked with Anarumo in Cincinnati, first on the practice squad, though he eventually fought his way onto the active roster. He mostly saw action on special teams, and his familiarity with Anarumo will clearly work in his favor during his battle against Olubi. But he will have even more of a chance to prove himself now with Franklin officially out.
Now, Bachie has gone from a dark horse to a very real candidate on the active roster, and he has a great shot to prove himself tomorrow.
