The 3-3 Indianapolis Colts are taking on the 2-3 Miami Dolphins in Week 7, and both teams have been without their starting quarterbacks for weeks. Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has been out since Week 2, after a helmet-first tackle into the Bills' Damar Hamlin, while Anthony Richardson suffered an oblique injury in the Colts Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since Richardson's injury, backup quarterback Joe Flacco has been starting, and his performance has led to many questions about who the Colts should choose as their starter for the rest of the season. Last week, Richardson had full participation during practice, but it was still Flacco who took the field during their divisional game against the Tennessee Titans. And Flacco has been doing well -- in the three weeks he's been playing, he has thrown for 716 yards and seven touchdowns, and only one interception. Yet his steady, reliable leadership has lacked the explosive potential that Richardson brings. So who will be the starter moving forward?

In his final press conference before the game, Steichen confirmed that Richardson will start on Sunday. "He will be ready to roll, yes," he said. "He looked good. He was throwing crisp passes, he was great in the pocket, got out, moving him around, ran a lot, so... he looked really good."

According to head coach Shane Steichen, the plan was always for Richardson to come back.

"(We) wanted to make sure he's 100 percent," he said. "That's what really went into the decision. He's really close – really close, which is why we had him as our third emergency quarterback. But he should be looking really good this week."

He further insinuated that the Colts see Richardson as the future of their franchise, noting that they didn't want to risk further injury so soon into the season, because they "want to have him for the long haul."

Richardson likewise signaled that he was feeling up to playing Sunday, too.

"I'm able to move better without any worries," Richardson said during practice this week. "Just confident in all the movements, you know. Throwing the ball, I'm confident in that, and then just running around out there at practice, I'm confident in all that. So I'd probably say that's the biggest difference."

"As of now, I think I'm pretty good," he added. "We're just making sure and hoping that when I am out there competing full speed at practice, you know, nothing sets me back."

And though many fans have turned the issue of Richardson's injury into one that pitted him against Flacco, he seems to have been grateful to have the opportunity to watch and learn from the veteran QB.

“I watched Joe — the way he prepared last week. He did a great job. I watched him during the games and how calm he is. It’s a blessing to see that," he said. "It just lets me know I gotta do the same thing."

And knowing that Richardson is the likely starter, the Dolphins have indicated that his athletic abilities could pose a real problem for them Sunday. "He looks like John Riggins," defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said, comparing Richardson to a Hall of Fame running back. "He's enormous. He's big. He runs through people."

Weaver further added that Richardson's ability to run makes it harder for the defense. "[T]he thing we try to stress to the guys is that even when it's empty, you've got to play it like Wildcat, because he can certainly pull the ball down and they can they can do a bunch of scheme runs in that situation," he said. "So it certainly provides issues for a defense."

Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell called him the "ultimate athlete" and said he would be the biggest challenge they would face this season. And while it's true that Richardson has trouble with consistency -- he's thrown for seven interceptions this season, and also has made numerous spectacular 50+ yard passes -- Weaver said that doesn't mean he isn't a threat.

"He is certainly still maturing as a player," Weaver said, "but I think his ceiling is incredibly high."
