3 wide receivers Colts need to consider before NFL trade deadline passes

The Colts need to have a "Help Wanted" sign.

The hopes for the Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver room have not worked out this season by any positive margin. Some of that has to do with Daniel Jones and his struggles. Still, Alec Pierce's injury, Josh Downs's virtually invisible presence, and offseason addition Keenan Allen's lack of impact have collectively weakened the Colts' passing attack.

The Colts wide receiver room ranks 29th in the league among 32 teams. Without Pierce, they have no vertical threat, and aside from Downs's 249 receiving yards, no other pass-catcher has done much. In the offseason, the wide receiver room was one of the Colts' biggest concerns. Nothing has changed five games into the season, and change might be coming.

The Colts already added to the group by signing Allen, but he hasn't clicked in the Colts' offense, and talk of acquiring another wideout is making the rounds. Specifically, Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. was recently connected to Indy, but he was traded to the Houston Texans instead.

The Indianapolis Colts have other WR trade options to help improve the passing attack

If the Colts are serious about adding another weapon, they have three more targets they could pursue via trade.

DK Metcalf (Pittsburgh Steelers)

DK Metcalf is the least likely on this list for the Colts’ future ambitions, but he's also the most interesting possible target. Either it's the Aaron Rodgers factor, or he's simply not a good fit with the Pittsburgh Steelers; Metcalf has, in any case, not worked out.

There is a world where the Steelers could trade Metcalf after just one and a half seasons, or wait until they get a different quarterback next year. That said, if there is any interest in him from other teams, would the Steelers turn it away? The Colts could land a No. 1 target with actual No. 1 target experience.

Jerry Jeudy (Cleveland Browns)

Once projected to be a top-level wideout in the NFL, Jerry Jeudy has fallen on hard times and will likely never reach the potential he had coming out of college. After four years with the Denver Broncos and now in his third with the Cleveland Browns, Jeudy is a likely trade candidate this season due to the younger wideouts Cleveland has.

Jeudy wouldn't change the Colts' offense in any dramatic way, but he would bring veteran stability and experience. Plus, Jeudy needs another change of scenery—his eight receptions for 81 yards in five games tell the story.

Kendrick Bourne (Arizona Cardinals)

Since the pursuit of Harrison Jr. didn't pan out—if the Colts were genuinely interested in him—then another Cardinals wideout could be a secondary option: Kendrick Bourne. The only good thing about the Cardinals offense is Trey McBride, who may be wasting his years and talent away in Arizona.

Bourne isn't elite by any means, but he is experienced, has put together multiple solid seasons as a depth wideout, and could add value to the Colts' offense. Furthermore, as a depth piece for his entire career, he's done more than the current batch of Colts wide receivers have done collectively.
