With the Indianapolis Colts set to enter training camp soon, most eyes are on the quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. But QB isn't the only position of interest; the crowded tight end room could be thinned out, and other positions seem poised to launch some breakout players, too.
Lately, there's been one person in particular getting attention, and it's a rookie not named Tyler Warren. While Warren has a lot of hype surrounding him, it's not much of a surprise to say he has fans excited. Justin Walley, however, is a bit different.
Taken in the third round, Walley was expected to help out the defense, but not necessarily so much that anyone's job would be at risk. That has since changed, and the buzz surrounding Walley seems to only be growing. The latest example comes from Stephen Holder at ESPN.
Analysts were asked to name the biggest offseason surprise for each team, and Holder thinks Walley fits the bill for the Colts.
"When the Colts selected Walley in the third round this year, the move felt like a bit of a surprise given the pre-draft projections for the former Minnesota standout. But Walley has been turning heads throughout the offseason with his aggressive coverage and impressive instincts, and it's now clear he has a chance to have a significant role in the defense as a rookie.Stephen Holder
The Colts are expected to play a greater variety of coverages this season, and Walley is showing potential in dime packages. Walley is "really sticky in coverage," coach Shane Steichen said. "Has been making a ton of plays through OTAs. So, very pleased with where he is at." "
Other than Charvarius Ward, the Colts don't really have a star playmaker at cornerback, so Walley not only provides depth, but promise. Juju Brents and Dallis Flowers have had problems staying healthy, and with a new defensive coordinator comes a new defensive scheme that may be difficult for them to adjust to.
Walley has none of that baggage, and his performance in college - he was known for being aggressive and making big, explosive plays - will pair nicely with Lou Anarumo. Fans will have to wait and see what happens during training camp, but the hype around Walley seems more than deserved.
