The 2025 season started off like a dream with the Indianapolis Colts sitting at 7-1 through their first eight games. It's all come crashing down over the past month though, as the Colts are now 8-6 and on the outside of the playoff picture.
Things were already trending south before the season-ending injury to Daniel Jones, but that certainly hasn't helped matters. With Jones done for the year and Anthony Richardson out with an orbital injury that he sustained earlier in the year, the Colts opted to sign 44-year-old Philip Rivers, who hadn't played a snap in the regular season for nearly five years until this past weekend.
With the Colts' quarterback woes this year, a Saints fan on the New Orleans Saints subreddit thought that they could potentially help Indy out for next year. It's obviously too late to save the Colts now but this Reddit user proposed that New Orleans send Spencer Rattler to the Colts via trade.
Colts quarterback disaster sparks wild Spencer Rattler trade idea
Rattler was once thought to be in the running to be the number one overall pick once upon a time but after a shaky season at Oklahoma, his draft stock plummeted and he transferred to South Carolina. The Saints took him in the fifth round of the 2024 draft and he's won just one game in 14 starts. In his defense, the Saints roster was doing him no favors in those games.
Trading for Rattler is an interesting idea but probably not one that the Colts would consider. Jones played well this year and even with the injury, it feels as though the team will bring him back next year and see what he can do. They'll also still have Richardson and sixth-rounder Riley Leonard who Rattler would be competing with simply to make the roster.
The Saints probably have more of a need for Rattler than the Colts do. They've seemingly struck gold with rookie quarterback Tyler Shough and while Rattler wasn't great as a consistent starter, if he needed to start a game here and there for them, that's not the worst news in the world.
The Colts will have some decisions to make this offseason when it comes to the quarterback position but, in all likelihood, Spencer Rattler won't be someone that's thrown around as a realistic option for them.
