For our next training camp battle, we discuss the running back position. While the starting spot is accounted for, with former All Pro Jonathan Taylor returning to be the bell cow back for the franchise, it is the depth behind him that is completely up for grabs. The current running back room is crowded but, in my opinion, not very competitive at all. The talent is there, but the path to the roster seems to be clear. Just one spot will garner our overall attention.

Running Back #2 (RB2)
Khalil Herbert vs DJ Giddens

Even in a crowded room of opportunities, this is the main camp battle we all want to see. Yes, the Colts brought back veteran Tyler Goodson, and have brought in veteran Salvon Ahmed as well. On the UDFA front, they signed rookie Ulysses Bentley IV for a chance to make the team in camp. Not saying these three don’t have a chance to make the team (they do), but the forefront battle will be Herbert vs Giddens. With the high stakes for the season, finding a viable backup to Taylor this season will be critical if this team wants to have success.

The Case For Herbert

You know how much I liked this signing when it occurred during the brunt of NFL Free Agency. I liked it for a couple of major reasons. First, it’s an experienced NFL running back that has seen the field in both a starting role and reserve role. Whatever the needs, he was able to adapt the plan for the week.

Secondly, he can provide some 3rd down back capabilities to give Taylor some rest. You may not admit it, but Taylor has seen a higher workload than most starting running backs when he is healthy. The Colts offense ran as a more cohesive unit two years ago with Zach Moss. Last season, it was Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson handling RB2, and it was not effective. Herbert brings some pass catching experience, and the ability to keep the ground game moving if Taylor misses time.

The Case For Giddens

It's hard to make a solid case for a rookie, but if the early returns are true, the Colts got a steal in this April’s draft. Some pundits had DJ Giddens as high as a 3rd round pick, and the Colts scooped him up in the 5th round. Why the fall to 5th round? For one, it was a very deep RB class this season, as many teams are looking to go to “RB by committee” this upcoming season.

But secondly, and more frankly, it appears he also fell because of his struggles with pass protection. While it’s something that can be coached into a player, sometimes small details matter. There is no denying his overall talent. Coming out of Kansas State, he showed improvement every year, and can get yards in chunks. He finished his career with a 6.0 YPC average, and has the quick 4.4 speed he showcased at the NFL Combine.

Final Prediction

To begin the season, I think it’s clear that the Colts will be relying on Khalil Herbert to shoulder the load of the RB2 role. I will say, though, that I think that DJ Giddens could have that role by the end of the season or it, at a minimum, becomes a split between the two backs. Herbert has only signed a one-year deal, and Giddens could be the future back of this team, especially with Jonathan Taylor set for a new contract after the 2026 season. Look for Giddens to get some scheme packages and gadget plays that showcase his talents.
