The Indianapolis Colts have another year of cemented roster spots for the wide receiver room. The Colts went last season with six for most of the season, and typically dressed five. Don’t expect that to change much this season. They did not add any meaningful names in the offseason as they look to run it back with the core group of last season.
With that said, is there a camp battle to be found? You must look all the way down the depth chart with Anthony Gould and veteran Ashton Dulin. While they may not be battling each other, they might be battling for the final spot if numbers get tight.
Who Might Have The Best Edge?
When the Colts drafted Anthony Gould, many thought he would help with depth, and even potentially replace Ashton Dulin. It has been the opposite. Gould struggled to find footing in his rookie season. He was relegated to special teams only, and was a healthy scratch at times. He only saw action in eight games, and only had one catch the entire season. He did see action in the return game, but nothing too game-changing.
2024 was not much better for Dulin, either. After two seasons of battling injuries, his impact was limited to special teams, only hauling in two catches, though he did find the end zone once. His role on special teams is the “gunner” role. It’s arguably the most important position on special teams, and he has continued to be consistent and impactful in his special teams role.
Will Special Teams Keep Them Both On The Team?
Will Dulin's role as the gunner put him over the top for the spot? Or could they value Gould as a returner to prevent placing Josh Downs in harm's way? Could Dulin handle both as main returner and gunner? He, without question, could, but to give up on Gould after one season seems a bit short-sighted. I think they both make the final roster, but if they can handle five in the WR room, Dulin would take that final spot.
