The Indianapolis Colts have made some good moves this offseason, but the biggest question has yet to be answered: who will be the starting quarterback on Week 1? Under general manager Chris Ballard, the Colts have been on an endless quarterback carousel, cycling through 12 quarterbacks in 10 years. Anthony Richardson was supposed to be the answer, and while his first season initially showed promise, it was cut short by injuries, and he then seriously regressed in 2024.
Initially, the idea was that Richardson had one last chance in Indianapolis with the 2025 season, but it was then announced that there would be a competition for QB1. After that, the Colts signed Daniel Jones, with both splitting OTAs to see who will win the starting job.
And according to Frank Schwab, the Colts' quarterback race will be one of the NFL's biggest stories this year.
"The Colts brought in Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson, the fourth pick of the 2023 NFL Draft who has not played well enough to be the Colts' established starter going into year three. The Colts want Richardson to find consistency and win the job. The question, starting with OTAs, is if Richardson responds well to the competition."Frank Schwab
Both quarterbacks have a lot riding on the 2025 season. It's Richardson's last chance to prove himself in Indianapolis, and Jones gambled on winning the QB1 spot after two disappointing seasons.
For most analysts, it's assumed that Richardson is who the Colts want to win the job. They have invested heavily in him, as their first-round draft pick, and will be looking to prove the risk was worth it. Richardson has been less accurate than Jones, but he also is more talented and athletic, and his ceiling is much higher. Of course, none of that matters if Richardson can't become more accurate and find the consistency the Colts want to find from him.
Either way, it evidently is going to be one heck of a story.
