Another year, another less-than-stellar quarterback situation for the Indianapolis Colts. Since Andrew Luck abruptly retired before the 2019 season, the Colts have trotted out 10 different starting quarterbacks hoping that one of them would be able to lead the team to some success.
Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. The Colts tried to find their own franchise quarterback in the 2023 draft, using the fourth overall pick on Anthony Richardson. The former Florida Gator is entering his third year in the league and the Colts brought in competition for him this summer in the form of Daniel Jones, another former first-round pick. It's not exactly the quarterback battle of the century and Colts fans probably don't have many expectations when it comes to the position and what could play out.
Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated put together a list of bold predictions for the 2025 NFL season and did a nice job summing up will probably happen in Indianapolis.
"Anthony Richardson will win the Colts’ QB job out of camp but …
"Both [Richardson] and Daniel Jones will finish with the same number of passing touchdowns (12)."
Colts fans are hoping SI's bold prediction doesn't come true but it very well might
Richardson winning the starting job isn't necessarily a bold prediction but the "but..." part is what could make it one. Orr is predicting that Richardson isn't able to hold onto the starting gig and then states that both he and Jones will throw for the same number of touchdowns.
This would be demoralizing for Colts fans but would it really be all that surprising? Richardson struggled in his sophomore season and is entering what could be his final year with the team if he doesn't perform better.
Meanwhile, Jones had one good year with the Giants and it helped him get a massive contract extension, one that he did not live up to. Now Jones lands in Indianapolis where, yes, it'd be great to see him perform well but fans probably shouldn't get their hopes up there.
Richardson threw eight touchdowns versus 12 interceptions in 11 starts in 2024 while Jones threw eight touchdowns and seven picks in 10 starts with the Giants last year. They threw the same number of touchdowns last year so would it really be that shocking to see them do so again this year even though they're on the same team?
It'd be great to see one of these guys emerge as a long-term solution for Indy but when push comes to shove, Colts fans shouldn't get their hopes up. No one would be shocked to see Orr's prediction become reality, as sad as that is to say.
