Shane Steichen's reaction to Daniel Jones' Week 7 performance is a fireable offense

Ridiculous.

Daniel Jones cannot remain the starter for the Indianapolis Colts, but he is very likely to do just that. That is because head coach Shane Steichen won't make a change, and that will probably help lead to him being ushered out of Colts headquarters after he loses his job soon.

In Week 7, in which Indy lost to a good Minnesota Vikings team 16-10, Jones completed 13 of 22 passes for 108 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. He should have had two, and maybe four. He definitely wasn't a player worthy of a long-term QB1 spot.

Two of Jones' first passes were to a receiver on a crossing route, and with a bit more anticipation, the Vikings could have had a pick-six on one or the other. A pass he threw late in the second half was floated under pressure to no receiver in particular. But does Steichen care? No, because he has "faith" in Jones.

Shane Steichen needs to go for his continued faith in Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones

Asked by reporters after Week 7 whether Steichen had thought about a quarterback change, he said, "No, I have not thought about a quarterback change...Because I have a ton of faith in Daniel Jones."

You shouldn't, Coach Steichen. The best part of his career came in the first half of last season, his first with the Colts. Before he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 14, he was back to turning the ball over and making poor decisions, the same as he had in his previous NFL life with the New York Giants.

Jones seemed changed early in 2025, but he wasn't. The Colts thought they had fixed him, but they hadn't. Jones obviously isn't fixable. He is more a version of his current self historically than he was in the first half of 2025. Shane Steichen can't see that, and that is why, as much as general manager Chris Ballard needed to go, so does the head coach.

The Colts can't win with Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback. He was signed this past offseason for two years and as much as $88 million. Ballard made the mistake of making the move, though the team has an out on the contract after this season and can save $38 million. The next GM might do just that.

But Shane Steichen could also have taken control of the situation and replaced Daniel Jones with Anthony Richardson.

Does Richardson have his own issues? Definitely, but Jones isn't good enough to play. Richardson should be given a chance, but Steichen has too much faith in Jones. Indianapolis shouldn't have faith in a head coach who is now 7-26 against teams with a .500 record or better, though.
