The NFL Draft is getting closer, and the anticipation is building but before we jump into another mock draft, let’s finish the needs content first. Last week we talked about the offensive needs, and this week, we moved to the defensive side of the ball. There are plenty of needs still, even with the additions from free agency.

Rank #1: Linebacker

This is, without question, the biggest need for this defense. The team lost EJ Speed and Grant Stuard in free agency this offseason. Both outside linebacker positions will be up for grabs, but specifically the right side as Jaylon Carlies looks to emerge as a starter this season. For all of Ballard’s faults, his ability to scout linebackers is his undisputed strength. They will need his expertise this draft, and though Jihad Campbell is most likely their top choice on the board, they could still pivot to Day 2 for their pick.

Carson Schwesinger/UCLA - A no brainer pick if they choose not to pick Campbell in the first round. Campbell could be available but if he is not, then Schwesinger could be the choice. A strong choice at that. A complete linebacker prospect that can drop back in coverage or assist in stopping the run. He can get sideline to sideline quickly and excels in blitz packages. He would fit the Lou Anarumo scheme perfectly.

Rank #2: Defensive Line

As mentioned in the last article, I might be in the minority again on the middle line depth being satisfactory. Obviously, Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner have been the leaders of the line. The signing of Neville Gallimore brings depth, and hopefully we will see a breakout season for Aditomiwa Adebawore.

However, the edge of the defensive line needs attention. The Colts have been subject to rumors of a Trey Hendrickson trade. Those have not materialized, but with both Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam playing on expiring contracts, it is time to grab some defensive edge depth.

Donovan Ezeiruaku/Boston College - I think both the interior and edge both command the attention of the draft board, but when in doubt, you prioritize the skill position. Ezeiruaku has been seen in some first-round mock drafts and on Day Two as well. He will settle at some point, but it’s a deep class this year. Paye and Ebukam are in contract years and Latu is the future. This pick gives them a tag team on the edge for years to come.
