The Indianapolis Colts have a major rebuilding phase ahead of them this offseason, and the bulk of the work they need to do is on defense. While pass rush is arguably their number one priority, it's far from the only position of need.
One of the key issues the Colts are facing is a battered cornerback room. Kenny Moore is still a reliable CB, but he's also still strictly a slot corner, and admittedly, Indy did try to address this problem... twice. Chris Ballard signed both Charvarius Ward and Sauce Gardner, and we all saw how those two gambles played out.
Indianapolis is going to desperately need a long-term solution at this position, but they're also going to need depth at the position. Even if Ballard is able to land an exciting prospect in the draft, that won't be enough. And a solution — albeit a very temporary one — could have just fallen into his lap.
Trevon Diggs could be the short-term cornerback fix the Indianapolis Colts desperately need
The Green Bay Packers released Trevon Diggs after just two games, and the veteran CB is now on the market again. The decision saved Green Bay a lot of money, and let's be honest... Diggs' best playing days may be behind him.
All the same, the Colts should consider looking into this one. By no means should Indy look to make him their CB1, but he could get a low-risk, one-year deal to prove he still has it, and add some depth to the Indianapolis cornerback room in the meantime.
Diggs has admittedly had a lot of injuries in recent years, and it has had a huge impact on his playing ability. But all the same, he was, at one time, one of the best cornerbacks in the league. He had a huge breakout season in 2021, where he broke the Dallas Cowboys franchise records with an insane 11 interceptions.
Of course, it isn't likely that he'll return to that kind of form, but crazier things could happen. More likely, though, he could serve as a mentor to a cornerback Ballard is able to pick up in the draft, and provide some depth for the Colts in the meantime.
Diggs is still just 27 years old, so he hasn't quite aged out of his position yet. He's still a talented player who was sidelined by injury. If he's open to an affordable contract, though, he could have a little more time to reignite his career and give Indy a little help... a win-win scenario if there ever was one.
