Colts GM Chris Ballard always talks about how roster construction is a year-round and fluid process, with the practice squad being no different. While most people kick this team to the side, we have seen this part of the roster really become an important aspect of not only roster building, but development. It has also become a security blanket for the key positions of this roster to allow some plug and play (or next man up) ability for this coaching staff. Let’s look at the new players, and potentially one key injury that may see them dive into the practice squad this week as the Colts open against division rival Houston.

Returning from preseason roster:

DE Genard Avery
WR DJ Montgomery
LB Austin Ajiake
LB Liam Anderson
CB Ameer Speed
QB Jason Bean
RB Evan Hull
K Spencer Shrader
CB Chris Lammons
WR Laquon Treadwell
CB/S Jaylin Simpson
DE Titus Leo

-Look for an increased role from Spencer Shrader this week and potentially throughout the season. The Colts reported on Monday that starter Matt Gay is battling a hamstring injury. If this lingers (as most hamstring injuries do), it could be an interesting storyline throughout the season.

-With the team keeping DBs Ameer Speed, Chris Lammons and rookie Jaylin Simpson the team did not bring back rookie 6th round pick Micah Abraham. The team did sign slot corner Samuel Womack off waivers from San Francisco and released Darrell Baker Jr in a corresponding move.
