August is just about halfway through, and that means we are getting closer and closer to the most important day of the summer, yet: roster cutdown day. For the Indianapolis Colts, there are still several spots up for grabs, as one of the latest depth charts would suggest.

If Indianapolis is going to finish higher than they did a year ago, they're going to need to figure out who the best remaining players are, outside of the starters. As fans saw firsthand in 2023, injuries happen, and a team had better secured the best possible backup plan. After quarterback Anthony Richardson went down early last year, backup Gardner Minshew was able to keep the team in some games and remain competitive.

Every position matters, and the NFL teaches us that year after year, as notable injuries can derail even the best teams in the league.

The AFC South still seems like a fairly tame division, outside of the Houston Texans, of course. Houston will be the top team to beat of the four, and if the Colts can find a way to stay in games versus the Texans, they should have as good a shot to win the division as any.

That means, though, that Richardson stays healthy, and so do many of the other key players. We've already seen significant losses like that of Josh Downs, meaning others will have to step up in his absence.

That's what training camp and the preseason are all about. The Colts have to find their best 53, but navigating that process can be a lot trickier than some might think. Situational football, schemes and playing to certain strengths will all come into play.

So, as time dwindles down, the Colts will begin cutting ties with players here and there, before a major trim on August 27, when every NFL franchise has to get to that magic number 53.

Below, you'll find an up-to-date running of each cut the Colts have made.
