6 Indianapolis Colts players who won't survive training camp
By Ryan Heckman
NFL training camps are in full swing, and the Indianapolis Colts are looking to build on an offseason that saw them retain a lot of their own players.
Of course, the talk of camp has been Anthony Richardson, making his return following a season-ending injury during his rookie campaign. Richardson has drawn a lot of praise and is subject of plenty of hype going into Year 2, and the Colts are banking on him following through.
As the preseason nears and camp continues to roll on, we thought we'd take a look at some of the Colts players who aren't likely to find themselves on the 53-man roster.
Let's make our way through six, specifically.
Colts players who won't make the final roster
Kedon Slovis, QB
To see a team keep three quarterbacks is rare, but four? That doesn't happen. Kedon Slovis is the Colts' fourth quarterback, and has next to no shot of making it. But, the former BYU quarterback was selected by the D.C. Defenders in the UFL Draft, so he has a future in football, regardless. He may have went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, but Slovis will be able to continue playing football even after the Colts ultimately let him go.
Eric Tomlinson, TE
At tight end, the Colts have invested quite a few draft picks in recent years. Between Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, Will Mallory and Drew Ogletree, Indianapolis simply won't have room to keep someone like Eric Tomlinson, who was a member of the team's practice squad at times last year.
Laquon Treadwell, WR
The former first-round pick has fallen pretty far over the years, but he has done his best to stick around the league. The Colts' wide receiver depth has way too many guys ahead of Laquon Treadwell at the moment, though, and he'll be headed for the practice squad, at best.
Genard Avery, DE
Even after Samson Ebukam's season-ending injury, it doesn't appear likely that Genard Avery has a legitimate shot at making the final roster. Barring anything unforeseen happening in the coming days, Avery is another practice squad candidate.
Clay Fields III, CB
The Colts added a couple of rookies at cornerback, via the draft, as well as the undrafted Clay Fields III out of Chattanooga. Fields still sits, essentially, dead last on the depth chart, though. Unless he is able to string together some incredible preseason performances, he'll be headed for the chopping block, as it stands.
Liam Anderson, LB
The former Holy Cross standout was a member of Indy's practice squad last year, and that's likely where he'll wind up for the second-straight season. Liam Anderson has six, maybe seven guys ahead of him at linebacker on the depth chart.
