Summer break has arrived in the NFL. All teams have completed their mandatory minicamps and headed to the dead period as training camp looms at the end of July and the preseason kicks off on Aug. 1.
Outside of some position-battle information, the Colts didn’t show much and came out relatively unscathed from camp. Second-year safety Daniel Scott was the lone player placed on IR with another season-ending injury.
WIth rookies highlighted in bold, let’s update the 53-man roster prediction now that minicamp is complete.
Quarterbacks (2)
- Roster Locks: Anthony Richardson, Joe Flacco
- Practice Squad: Kedon Slovis (3rd QB)
- Cuts: Sam Ehlinger, Jason Bean
Rookie year 2.0 for Anthony Richardson will finally begin. The hope is he can stay healthy so we can all see his true potential.
With Gardner Minshew II in Las Vegas, the Colts signed veteran backup Joe Flacco to help bring along Richardson. He will be a terrific asset to this team and can keep it relevant in the event Richardson has to miss time.
With those two players locked into their respective spots on the roster, the emergency third QB is up for grabs. Incumbent Sam Ehlinger will try to return and earn his spot, but don’t count out rookie UDFA Kedon Slovis. The franchise gave him a guarantee on his contract, and he will have a real opportunity to make this team as a developmental piece.
Running backs (3)
- Roster Locks: Jonathan Taylor, Evan Hull, Trey Sermon
- Practice Squad: Tyler Goodson
- Cuts: Zavier Scott
We saw the coaching staff tip their hand a bit on who might be the true No. 2 back for training camp, and that back is Trey Sermon.
Jonathan Taylor was excused from OTAs, and that is where we saw Sermon as the featured back in his absence. He won’t be without competition as Evan Hull is returning from his season-ending knee injury, and Tyler Goodson will fight for snaps in the room, as well.
