It might be the end of the line for this guy.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Trey Sermon during the 2023 offseason hoping that he could help take their rushing attack to new heights.

Unfortunately, Sermon was only in Indianapolis because he failed to live up to his draft hype with the 49ers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He's continued to disappoint since joining the Colts, and the latest injury development doesn't exactly point to a promising NFL career.

Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that Sermon suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the preseason game against the Broncos. Injuries have been an issue for Sermon during his pro career and this could potentially be the final nail in the coffin for the former superstar running back.

Trey Sermon is already dealing with an injury after one preseason game

Sermon was a lot of fun to watch in college, spending three years with Oklahoma and putting together his best collegiate season in 2018 where he dashed for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Sooners. Sermon transferred to Ohio State for his senior year in 2020 and rushed for over 300 yards in the Big Ten National Championship Game, showcasing what an absolute stud he could be when carrying the ball.

Sermon's productive collegiate career led the 49ers to spend a third-round pick on him in the 2021 draft but they didn't get much out of the running back. Sermon played just nine games as a rookie and rushed for just 167 yards and a touchdown and missed time due to an ankle injury.

The Eagles took a chance on Sermon after he was let go by the Niners but he failed to do much in Philadelphia either, appearing in only two games and carrying the ball twice. The Colts were Sermon's third team in as many years and he appeared in 14 games for them in 2023 while rushing for 160 yards.

The hope was that Sermon had shown enough in 2023 to finally be a reliable backup running back but this hamstring injury might officially dash those dreams. Fortunately, the Colts have Jonathan Taylor as their main running back but behind him, the depth is iffy.

This was Sermon's chance to show that he could be leaned on as a backup option and if this injury sidelines him for a chunk of time, the rest of the NFL might move on from believing that Trey Sermon can be a reliable weapon for them.
