The first year of the Shane Steichen era was promising in Indianapolis. After a brutal 4-12-1 season in 2022 that included the dreadful Jeff Saturday experience, the Colts were in the mix for the playoffs last season up until the final week of the regular season, but ultimately came up short.

Despite rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson suffering a season-ending injury after just four games, the Colts stayed afloat behind journeyman veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew II. After a 3-5 start, Indianapolis won six of eight games and were in a three-team race for the AFC South that went to the final day of the regular season.

In Week 18, the Colts came up short to the Houston Texans, 23-19, but the future looks bright. Still, a second-year head coach and quarterback, who is unproven and coming off a season-ending injury, has the Colts in a long shot spot to win it all in 2024.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Colts are +5000 ($100 bet wins $5,000). That gives Indianapolis an implied probability of 1.96% to win the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2006.

The Colts would have to break free from a loaded conference. Indianapolis is the 11th favorite out of the AFC, which will make them underdogs just to reach the postseason in 2024. The Colts are projected to finish third in the AFC South, but they’ll be within striking distance for a division crown as Houston (+2500) and Jacksonville (+3000) have long Lombardi odds, as well.

After finishing second in the AFC South last season, Indianapolis will have a trio of matchups with fellow divisional runner-ups including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos and New York Giants.

Richardson underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in October after an AC joint sprain. Richardson showed flashes in his brief time on the field.

After being taken fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson went 2-2 over four starts, throwing for 577 yards and 3 touchdowns and running for 136 yards and 4 scores. Richardson, who battled injuries and missed a start before being shut down by the shoulder, is the 14th-favorite on a quarterback-laden odds board to win the AP MVP award next season at +3000.
