5 realistic free agents Colts could sign in 2024
By Ryan Heckman
3. Jacoby Brissett, QB
One of the more intriguing and underrated positions this offseason is at backup quarterback. Gardner Minshew was able to keep the Colts competitive after Richardson went down last season, but he's set to become a free agent.
Ballard loves Minshew and has publicly stated as much recently:
"We think the world of Gardner. He is highly competitive. And he sees himself, and I wouldn't want it any other way from Gardner. He bleeds confidence, that's who he is and that's what I love about him."
But, if Minshew gets paid elsewhere, then the Colts need to fill the role of backup quarterback. And, it would be a fun reunion to see Jacoby Brissett come back to Indianapolis after spending the past three seasons playing for as many teams.
Brissett spent four seasons with the Colts, of course, from 2017-2020 and started 30 games for them in that span. He's proven to be one of the best backups in the league, and again, this is a position the Colts need to take seriously with Richardson working his way back from injury.
For his career, Brissett has done pretty well limiting turnovers and isn't going to be a guy who is the reason you lose games. That's what you like to have in a backup quarterback, and he'd be a realistic option if Minshew goes to a new squad.
