One Colts player may be interested in a new number after a recent NFL rule change
Following a recent rule change about jersey numbers in the NFL, one Indianapolis Colts player may soon be getting a new digit on his jersey.
All week, coaches, general managers, and team owners have been meeting in Arizona for league meetings. As part of these meetings, the NFL’s decision-makers discuss ways to make the league better, and vote on changes that they plan to enact. One rule that was a talking point this year was jersey numbers, and whether or not players should be able to wear the No. 0.
The No. 0 is allowed in other professional sports and in college sports, but for a while, it wasn’t allowed in the NFL. That changed on Tuesday when the league voted to make 0 a wearable jersey number. Now, several players are considering making a number change. Jacksonville Jaguars receiver, Calvin Ridley, led the way, making his announcement shortly after the rule passed.
Another young player in the AFC South may be joining Ridley soon in the No. 0. Indianapolis Colts tight end, Jelani Woods, took to Twitter to float the idea of changing to the No. 0 with the Colts, the number that Woods wore during his time in college.
Colts TE Jelani Woods may switch to the No. 0
There have already been several images of Woods’ Indianapolis uniform edited to the No. 0, and Woods seems to be loving it. In college, Jelani Woods wore Nos. 18 and 89 during his first three years at Oklahoma State, but after transferring to Virginia, Woods rocked the No. 0, and that’s also when his draft stock really started to rise.
However, as a rookie with the Colts, Woods wore No. 80. It’s unclear if Jelani Woods will actually change his jersey number but he certainly appears to be thinking about it. The NFL doesn’t make changing jersey numbers a cheap process, so that could ultimately be the determining factor of whether we see Woods in No. 0 or No. 80 next season.
Regardless of what number is on Woods’ jersey next season, he should be seeing an increased roll in Indy’s offense. As a rookie for the Colts, Jelani Woods caught 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns. However, he wasn’t on the field as much as people hoped he would be. With his size, athleticism, and now experience, that should change in year two.
