Colts have the chance to re-sign a young player that got away

The Indianapolis Colts have the opportunity to bring a young player, that they were sad to lose, back to Indy this season.

Every year, the NFL has a ton of heartbreaking cuts. Teams can only take 53 men into the season on the active roster, so a ton of players end up being released, even ones that the franchise really hopes to keep. Sometimes, teams will cut a player, hope they clear waivers, and immediately sign them to the practice squad.

However, that’s a risky process, and the Indianapolis Colts experienced the downside of that gamble last offseason. Following the 2022 preseason, the Colts had several young players that they wanted to keep around, but not all of them could make the 53-man roster. One of the players that Indy ended up cutting was linebacker Sterling Weatherford.

The undrafted free agent had a great training camp and preseason last year, but didn’t make the final roster. The Colts were hoping that he would clear waivers so they could add him to the practice squad. Unfortunately, the Chicago Bears claimed Weatherford; a move that Chris Ballard was admittedly saddened by.

Well, a year later, Weatherford was just released by Chicago. Indy now has the chance to bring him back to town. Will the team do it?

Will Colts bring Sterling Weatherford back?

Sterling Weatherford played 14 games last season with the Bears, but he spent all his time on special teams, racking up four tackles. Unfortunately, Chicago decided to go into training camp without him, and he’ll now have to find a new home.

That could be Indianapolis, but Indy isn’t necessarily pressed at the linebacker position, and the team has a ton of guys for special teams. With Shaquille Leonard, Zaire Franklin, and EJ Speed, Indy also has guys like Grant Stuard, JoJo Domann, and Cameron McGrone trying to make the roster. It’ll be interesting to see if Sterling Weatherford is added back into the mix.
