The lasting memory from Anthony Richardson’s preseason debut will likely be his lone interception, but Richardson did a lot to have Indianapolis Colts fans excited about their new quarterback.
Richardson went 7-for-12 for 67 yards with that pick, but also impressed with his legs and his physicality.
The No. 4 overall pick is fourth in rookie of the year odds, but he just might be the guy to bet. Let’s check out those odds.
Anthony Richardson Rookie of the Year odds
Richardson is the third quarterback on the board and is even behind a running back in terms of odds, but I think he’s absolutely the QB to bet.
Let’s take a look at his situation compared to the situation of the other QBs that will be Day 1 starters.
Bryce Young has no wide receivers left in Carolina with DJ Moore gone and Houston might have an even worse receiver corp.
Neither has a particularly great offensive line and neither Young or Stroud are a better runner than Richardson, which will be a big deal for a rookie who’s overwhelmed by NFL pass-rushers and NFL secondaries.
At least Richardson has Michael Pittman Jr. who had 99 catches last year and 1,082 yards in 2021.
Alec Pierce is also a deep threat who will let Richardson uncork a few deep balls a game. That’s better than what the other rookie starters are dealing with and regardless, it’s Richardson’s legs that are going to help him stand out in his rookie year.
Richardson is in Shane Steichen’s system, the same system that made Jalen Hurts an MVP candidate last year.
Hurts had the most red zone rushing attempts of any quarterback last year and the fifth most of all players with 44. Hurts rushed for 13 touchdowns and Richardson could absolutely end up with double-digit touchdowns on the ground.
Colts fans learned in Richardson's preseason debut, it won’t always be pretty, but Richardson has the talent to make it work in Indy.
