2. Colts could cut QB Sam Ehlinger
This will be something interesting to monitor throughout the offseason. Teams typically don’t carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but Indy did last season because Sam Ehlinger had an undeniable training camp and preseason. Will this year be different?
What is different is that Indianapolis has rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. The Colts drafted Richardson with the fourth-overall pick in hopes that he will become the franchise quarterback for Indianapolis. Everything Indy does will be to develop Richardson and get him on the field as quickly as possible. That includes bringing Gardner Minshew to Indy.
Following Shane Steichen over from the Philadelphia Eagles, Minshew comes to Indy as a veteran quarterback to help Richardson learn the system and the pro game, and start games if needed. Because of his experience, he’ll certainly have the edge over Ehlinger as the QB2.
Although Sam Ehlinger played in a couple of games last season, he didn’t necessarily prove that he has a future at quarterback for the Colts. Though, he was playing in a terrible offense. Even still, with Anthony Richardson now on the roster, Ehlinger’s time in Indy may be coming to an end.
