The Indianapolis Colts' biggest free agency questions happen to lie at the feet of two of a football team's most important positions: the quarterback and wide receiver. Of course, the Colts have several needs general manager Chris Ballard is expected to address this summer on the defensive side of the ball, but on the offense, he might already have the answers.

Bringing back Daniel Jones was at the top of Ballard's priority list, and for now, that's taken care of. Additionally, bringing Alec Pierce back home to Indianapolis is also on Ballard's list, as he's also made clear. Pierce will have plenty of suitors outside the Colts, meaning he could walk if a better deal is offered by another team.

That said, the Colts are expected to go hard after Pierce, and in free agency in general, but with their focus on Jones and Pierce, who were already part of the team. However, they were not the only positions the Colts needed to address, and one NFL insider believes Ballard will be more active this summer than he has in the past.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler predicts the Indianapolis Colts will swing big in free agency

The Colts will have $33.2 million in cap space this summer to work with, which gives them plenty of cash to dish out for the right players. Ballard views both Jones (who was just transitioned tagged) and Pierce as two of those right players, but there could be more, given their needs at defensive line and linebacker.

According to ESPN's NFL insider, Jeremy Fowler, there are roughly four teams that will lead the league in activity in free agency, and he listed the Colts in that grouping.

"This is about keeping their top players in-house," Fowler wrote. "The Colts want to retain Alec Pierce before the new league year after tagging Daniel Jones."

Re-signing Pierce will cost some serious dollars, but if Ballard is serious about the comments he made a week ago about the standout wideout being at the top of his list of priorities, he better back that up by backing up the bank truck. As for the rest of the team, however, the Colts have plenty of needs that could require significant free-agent signings.

Due to tagging Jones, Indy is now several million dollars over the 2026 salary cap. An eventual agreement on a long-term deal between Jones and the Colts will change that number. Ballard will need all the cap room available to him to make Fowler's prediction stay true, in that the Colts will be very active in the coming weeks.

This offseason could be huge for their future with Jones under center. It's clearer than ever that he is the Colts' chosen quarterback moving forward. But Jones' non-elite status means Indianapolis has to bulk up its support — wide receivers, linebackers, linemen, you name it — to build the right team around him. For Ballard, spending big is his only option.
