While the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback situation is as polarizing as any in the league, the back field has also seen a shake-up this offseason.
Jonathan Taylor isn't going to be out of a job anytime soon, as he's still a premier back in this league when healthy. But, he's seen some depth and competition forming behind him, which is a positive.
However, one recent addition might not even get a chance to suit up for the Colts come the regular season.
ESPN's Mike Clay recently dove into some rookie running back profiles and, when it came to the Colts' fifth-round pick DJ Giddens, he offered some intriguing intel.
Khalil Herbert might already be in danger of missing out on a Colts roster spot
"Behind feature back Jonathan Taylor, Giddens will battle Tyler Goodson for primary backup duties," wrote Clay.
Interestingly enough, Clay did not include newly-signed Khalil Herbert in this segment. Instead of mentioning the former Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears running back, he chose to talk about Tyler Goodson.
If Clay is right, it will be Goodson and Giddens manning the no. 2 and no. 3 spots behind Taylor -- not Herbert.
This wouldn't be a huge surprise, but it would seem a little odd that the Colts signed Herbert to a $1.3 million deal this offseason only to cut him later on. One could argue Herbert is a better back than the likes of Goodson, but it depends on what this coaching staff prefers.
Goodson is three years younger than Herbert and has far less mileage on him. Granted, Herbert has been a starting running back in the past at times, while Goodson has had a hard time seeing the field in his first two seasons.
Regardless, Giddens should be a lock to make this team and will ideally see some playing time as a rookie. His patient style and ability to catch the football will go a long way for a less-than-ideal quarterback situation.
Will Herbert get the boot or make the final roster, though? That's the question.
