Laquon Treadwell has managed to find a home with the Indianapolis Colts for a couple of seasons, and he was trending toward a third until the team agreed to a deal with free agent Keenan Allen on Monday. Maybe Treadwell will still make the roster, but that is certainly tougher now.
Oddly, how Treadwell handles one situation could imply what happens in another. The first thing he might be asked to do is give up his jersey number. He wears number 13, and has since he joined Indy in 2024. He had never worn the number before, though, so maybe that won't be difficult to give up.
Allen, who has had by far the better career and is the senior wideout, has never worn anything but number 13. He deserves to keep that jersey, and Treadwell will need to allow that to happen. This likely won't be difficult, and players often give up their jersey numbers to another player, who sometimes offers some money for the number that is many times then donated to charity.
Indianapolis Colts' Laquon Treadwell could face two losses after Keenan Allen signing
Treadwell has also worn numbers 11, 18, 80, and 82 in his well-traveled career. He isn't going to wear 18 with the Colts, however, as that number was worn by the legendary Peyton Manning and the jersey has been retired by the team.
Treadwell could grab number 80, but that is worn by rookie Deion Burks. The problem there is that if Burks doesn't make the roster (he has an iffy training camp and was a seventh-round selection), Treadwell might not be able to claim the number if Burks is released.

That is because the second loss Treadwell could suffer by the Indianapolis Colts signing Keenan Allen is the same fate as Burks: Laquon Treadwell might also be among those players the team releases when final roster cuts are made on August 30.
He was likely barely hanging on to the bottom of the roster because he hadn't played well enough offensively to battle for the WR3 spot that Allen now owns. Instead, Treadwell would have had to earn his way on special teams, but safety Jonathan Owens might stay with the team because of his excellent ability in the third phase of the game. He is better than Treadwell in that area.
The reality is likely that Treadwell will graciously give up number 13 to Allen, find a new number, but only for a short period of time. The two-year Colts player could only be with the team for less than two more weeks. In which case, he would happily take whatever number was given to him as long as he could find a new team to play for.
