The move is obvious, right? New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will miss the rest of the season after injuring his meniscus and MCL in Week 2, and he will miss the rest of the season. New York needs a replacement, and why shouldn't that be the Indianapolis Colts' Anthony Richardson?
The Indy QB requested to be traded this past offseason, and maybe it's assumed that he rescinded that request, but why? He is still a backup, so his situation is only better in 2026 because he isn't hurt as he was for most of last season. He still has just a year left on his rookie deal, and getting an opportunity to play elsewhere would be beneficial to him.
He also has a similar skill set to Dart. Both have strong arms, but their mobility is what could allow them to make game-changing plays. Perhaps Richardson would be a better fit in the New York system than he is in Shane Steichen's.

And Richardson is very unlikely to worry about being a fit in Steichen's scheme in 2027. The quarterback will either leave in free agency and sign with a team where he has a chance to be QB1, or Steichen could be fired if the team fails to make the playoffs again, or both.
With Dart missing the rest of the season, New York is left with veteran Jameis Winston. New York needs at least a backup, and Richardson fits. The current Colts quarterback also doesn't need to be a long-term solution for New York. He could be traded to New York, try to get starter's reps, and use that as an audition for any future team.
Meanwhile, the Giants could use a quarterback who fits Dart's profile and doesn't change their offense much. It could be a win for all involved.
That includes the Indianapolis Colts, too, of course. Indy could get a little trade value back for a quarterback they hope never has to play. The team has Riley Leonard, who could be QB2, so Richardson is expendable. Daniel Jones is the starter, and he isn't going anywhere.
What would it take for the New York Giants to acquire Anthony Richardson? That is unknown because general manager Chris Ballard makes off choices sometimes. Refusing to trade Richardson doesn't make much sense, even if that is what he is thinking, because Richardson doesn't offer any value while sitting on the bench.
If the Giants offer a fifth-round choice, that should be enough. Richardson hasn't played well enough in his career and has also been injured quite a bit, so teams aren't going to offer something as high as a third-round pick. But a fifth-rounder would be gold for the Colts. The Giants just need to make the call.
