The Jaguars could accidentally help the Colts in a big way

In what way?

The Jacksonville Jaguars took the league by storm last year under Liam Coen, when they went 13-4 and won the AFC South. The Indianapolis Colts ended up finishing the year 8-9 as they stumbled to close out the season.

Based on the early reports, quarterback Daniel Jones' rehab from his torn Achilles has gone well, setting the stage for him to return early in the season. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was another impact player who had his season cut short. He suffered a herniated disc in his neck that limited him to 10 games.

The Colts could use some depth in the defensive tackle room, and the Jags could end up helping Indianapolis in that area. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay floated that Jacksonville's Arik Armstead could be a cut candidate.

A possible looming Jaguars move could create good news for the Indianapolis Colts

"Despite his steady production over the years, Arik Armstead has emerged as a potential cap casualty for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Releasing the defensive lineman would save the team nearly $15 million, which could be used to shore up weaker areas on the roster ahead of training camp.... he'll be 33 years old in November and has worn down the tread on his tires over a decade-plus in the NFL. Keeping him around may be a luxury the Jags cannot afford, especially if he takes a step back after his best pass-rushing season in four years."

The Colts would love to add another veteran to the defensive front, and if Armstead does get axed, Indianapolis should quickly jump into the sweepstakes to land him.

As Kay pointed out, releasing Armstead would save the Jags $14.485 million, which is a nice chunk of change at this point in the offseason. Not only did they have DaVon Hamilton, but they also have a second-rounder in Ruke Orhorhoro, whom they traded for in April.

The Jags could afford to move on from Armstead, and that would massively help the Colts. It would give them another veteran to lean on, especially as Buckner comes back from a season-ending injury.

Last season, Armstead appeared in 16 games (11 starts), where he had 28 total tackles, seven TFLs, eight QB hits, and 5.5 sacks. He also logged 48 total pressures and 39 hurries, showcasing that he can get after the quarterback from the interior.

While he isn't the most elite run defender, he knows how to clog up lanes and use his leverage to slow down the run game. Armstead is an 11-year vet with 359 total tackles, 53 TFLs, and 41 sacks in his career with the 49ers and Jaguars.

The idea of him potentially joining the Colts would be a nice addition at this point of the offseason. He's played on several playoff teams and knows what it takes. He would be a good veteran addition to the locker room and give them another defensive tackle they could lean on in 2026. Time will tell if the Jags actually release him, but if they do, the Colts should pounce.
