Trey Hendrickson ending up with the Indianapolis Colts seemed to make too much sense. For one, they have a need in the pass-rushing department and secondly, Lou Anarumo is now the defensive coordinator of the Colts. Anarumo spent the last half decade as the Bengals defensive coordinator and worked with Hendrickson over the last four years.
Colts fans might have slowly been getting their hopes up but I'm afraid those dreams might officially be dashed. According to FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz, "the idea of a trade appears dead" when it comes to Hendrickson because the Bengals would like to get an extension done with him.
"My understanding of the Trey Hendrickson situation is that the organization and ownership are fully prepared to move forward and attempt to negotiate a deal with him," Schultz reported on the NFL on FOX podcast. "I don't believe they want to trade him at all, and I actually would say after talking to multiple people involved, that they have now reached the conclusion that a trade is now really off the table. So, that's great news for Bengals fans."
Great news for Bengals fans, but bad news for Colts fans who still thought this trade could play out.
Trey Hendrickson trade probably isn't happening for Colts... or at all
The Bengals were probably never realistically going to let Hendrickson leave without getting a king's ransom in return and that's something Chris Ballard isn't going to give to them. Yes, Hendrickson is a great player but he's also 30 years old and will turn 31 in December. To give up a ton of draft capital and then pay Hendrickson a boatload of cash might not be in the Colts' best interests, especially considering they're not exactly on the verge of being Super Bowl contenders anytime soon.
That being said, it's a bummer that this trade isn't going to happen. There's no doubt that Hendrickson would make the Colts defense a better unit and reuniting him with Anarumo would have been fun.
Guess the Colts will just have to draft their own star pass rusher. Should be easy, right?
