The Indianapolis Colts will be under a lot of pressure in 2026, and they’re hoping that having healthy starters will make their offense one of the best in the league again. Defensively, though, Indy’s problems aren't as simple as getting healthy.
The Colts struggled on defense in 2025, and that’s why the unit underwent some significant changes. Indianapolis moved on from pillar players like Zaire Franklin and Kenny Moore II and is handing the keys to some younger players. One of those players is someone who’s being somewhat overlooked after a rocky entry into the league.
That player is defensive back Justin Walley, entering his second season in the league. After not playing as a rookie, Walley has the chance to emerge as an impact player for Indianapolis.
Justin Walley could be an important contributor on the Indianapolis Colts defense in 2026
Walley was a third-round pick in 2025, being selected with the 80th-overall pick. That showed that Indianapolis valued him, and he proved why, putting together an impressive training camp. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL and didn’t get to play at all as a rookie.
Now healthy, Walley was recently named as a nonstarter to know in a recent ESPN piece. NFL analyst Aaron Schatz highlighted how his first season unfolded, praised the corner for his ability to read receivers, and said that Walley will compete with Mekhi Blackmon for the starting slot corner role.
That slot role is, of course, open because the team moved on from Kenny Moore II — partly because Indianapolis has high expectations for Walley. If he can establish himself as the starting nickel, he will be a part of a secondary that was built to turn things around.
The Colts have Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward at corner, and likely Cam Bynum and rookie A.J. Haulcy at the safety positions. If this group of relatively new Indianapolis players can quickly put everything together, the pass defense should take a huge step in the right direction.
If that happens, the Colts should have a better defense, and if everything goes right on offense, they will have a chance to contend.
